No lighting condition transforms photographs like golden hour — the 45–60 minutes immediately after sunrise and before sunset. In Kerala, golden hour is particularly spectacular given the coastal geography, paddy fields, and water bodies that reflect warm light dramatically.
Timing Is Everything
Use apps like PhotoPills or Golden Hour One to get the exact golden hour times for your location. Arrive 20 minutes early to set up, scout compositions, and be ready when the light hits. In Kochi, golden hour colours typically last only 15–20 intense minutes.
Camera Settings for Golden Hour
- ISO: 100–400 (light is bright enough to stay low)
- Aperture: f/5.6–f/11 for landscapes to maximise depth of field
- White Balance: 4500K–5500K, or set to "Cloudy" to enhance warmth
- Use a tripod for landscapes to allow slow shutter speeds
Composition in Golden Light
Position your subject so the sun is behind and slightly to the side — this creates rim lighting that separates them from the background dramatically. For landscapes, shoot directly into the light through trees or water for silhouette effects. Reflections in backwaters and rice fields multiply the impact of golden light.
CIMT students practice golden hour photography at locations across Kochi and Ernakulam during the Photography Master Program.
