Short-form video is the dominant content format in 2026. Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and similar formats have their own editing conventions that differ significantly from long-form film and wedding video work. Here is what performs in 2026.
The First 2 Seconds Win or Lose
Viewers decide to watch or scroll within 2 seconds. Start with your most visually striking moment — not a title card or slow intro. A fast cut, unexpected visual, or text overlay with a bold statement works best. Save the context for second five.
Vertical Format — Design for Mobile
All short-form content should be shot and edited in 9:16 vertical format (1080×1920 or 4K equivalent). In Premiere Pro, create a sequence at 1080×1920. Position graphics and text in the central 80% of the frame — safe zone for most mobile screen shapes.
Pacing and Cut Rhythm
Reels and Shorts perform best with cuts every 2–4 seconds. Use music as a cut guide — slice on beats. Jump cuts are acceptable and even preferred for tutorial and talking-head content.
Subtitles Drive Completion Rates
85% of social media videos are watched without sound. Add subtitles. Use auto-caption tools in Premiere Pro or CapCut, then clean up errors manually. Subtitle style: white text, black outline, large enough to read on a phone screen without squinting.
