How to Choose Your First DSLR Camera — A Beginner's Guide

17 January 2026  ·  CIMT Media Blog

Choosing your first DSLR is exciting but confusing. Most beginners either overspend on specs they don't need or buy something that limits them quickly. Here is a practical guide for students in Kerala.

Budget Sweet Spot

For students in Kerala, the ₹30,000–₹60,000 range covers excellent entry-level DSLRs. The Canon EOS 1500D (₹35,000) and Nikon D3500 (₹38,000) are the most recommended — 24MP sensors, reliable autofocus, and huge learning communities online.

Key Features to Check

  • Sensor: APS-C crop sensor is standard and fine for professionals too
  • Kit lens: 18-55mm included — covers portraits, landscapes, street
  • Video: Full HD 1080p minimum; 4K is a bonus
  • Battery life: DSLRs last 500–800 shots per charge; much better than mirrorless

Mirrorless vs DSLR

Mirrorless is the industry future, but lenses cost more and battery life is shorter. If budget exceeds ₹55,000, the Sony ZV-E10 is an excellent entry mirrorless. Otherwise, stick with a DSLR for learning.

At CIMT's Photography Program in Aluva, Kochi, students train on professional equipment from day one — no camera purchase required before joining.
