Kerala's tropical environment creates lighting conditions you won't find in most photography textbooks. Shooting outdoors here means navigating intense midday sun, overcast monsoon skies, lush backlit greenery, and the spectacular golden light of coastal locations.
Handling Harsh Midday Sun (10 AM – 3 PM)
Direct overhead sun creates harsh shadows under eyes and chins — unflattering for portraits. Solutions: open shade (under trees or awnings), use a reflector to fill shadows, or expose for shadows and let highlights blow slightly. A diffuser over your flash helps outdoors.
Monsoon Photography
Overcast monsoon skies act as a giant softbox — flattering, even light. Use this to your advantage for portraits and street photography. Keep ISO 400–800 to retain detail. Protect your gear with a rain cover or a large zip-lock bag.
Golden Hour in Kerala
Kerala's best light is 30–60 minutes after sunrise and before sunset. Coastal areas like Varkala, Cherai, and Fort Kochi glow magnificently. Backlight subjects against the sun for rim-lit silhouettes, or position them with the light at 45 degrees for warm skin tones.
CIMT's Photography Master Program includes location shoots across Kochi and Ernakulam, teaching you to read and master Kerala's light in real conditions.
