Studio lighting gives you complete control over how your subject looks — something natural light never can. For photographers in Kochi working in studios or home setups, understanding these configurations is essential.
The Three Core Lights
- Key Light: Your primary, dominant light source. Placed 45 degrees to the side and slightly above eye level
- Fill Light: Softens shadows created by the key light. Placed opposite the key at lower power (1:2 ratio)
- Backlight / Hair Light: Separates subject from background. Placed behind and above, aimed at the back of the head
Common Lighting Patterns
Rembrandt: Key light at 45° — creates a triangle of light on the shadow cheek. Dramatic and artistic. Loop Lighting: Key at 30° — creates a small shadow of the nose. Most flattering for general portraits. Butterfly / Paramount: Key directly in front and above — glamour lighting that emphasises cheekbones.
Modifiers That Matter
A large softbox (60x90cm minimum) produces soft, flattering light for portraits. A reflector (silver or white) bounces light as a cheap fill. A beauty dish gives crisp but soft light — popular for fashion photography.
CIMT's studio in Aluva, Kochi has full studio lighting equipment. Photography students get hands-on studio sessions from month one.
