Logo Design Tips Using Adobe Illustrator — A Beginner's Guide

28 January 2026  ·  CIMT Media Blog

Logo design is often the first paid graphic design work beginners take on. A professional logo must work in black and white, scale from a business card to a billboard, and instantly communicate a brand's identity. Here is how to approach it in Illustrator.

Why Illustrator — Vector vs Raster

Photoshop is pixel-based (raster) — images lose quality when scaled up. Illustrator is vector-based — logos stay sharp at any size because they are mathematical equations, not pixels. Always design logos in Illustrator or Illustrator-compatible tools.

Start with the Grid

Enable View → Show Grid in Illustrator. Logos built on a grid feel balanced and intentional. Many famous logos (Instagram, Twitter, Google) are built on precise geometric circles and golden ratios. The grid also makes logos easier to revise later.

Keep It Simple

A good logo reads clearly at 32px (favicon) and looks good at 3200px (billboard). Complex gradients, detailed illustrations, and thin lines fail at small sizes. Aim for a logo that can be sketched from memory after seeing it once.

Colour Psychology for Kerala Businesses

  • Blue: trust, professionalism (technology, finance)
  • Gold/Yellow: luxury, warmth (weddings, hospitality)
  • Green: nature, health (tourism, wellness)
  • Red: energy, passion (food, entertainment)

Logo and branding design is taught in the Graphic Design Mastery Program at CIMT Kochi.
